Make Biotechnology degree equivalent to other Life Science Degree courses

Make Biotechnology degree equivalent to other Life Science Degree courses
The Issue
Biotechnology is one of the flourishing applied biology field .Mainly Biotechnology is a research oriented subject as it said. In India, Biotechnology courses running in Universities include Undergraduate and Post Graduate level courses in both Science and Technology streams i.e. B Sc & M Sc as well as B Tech & M Tech Biotechnology courses. After this courses the student will only have one option, research?. After research i.e. their career options are either doing research further or academic jobs. In our country there are lakhs and lakhs of students passing biotechnology degree annually and only less than one percent succeeded to get a job in this field.
During admission times the newspapers talks about the booming Biotech industry, about billion dollar biotech companies and the opportunities of biotechies could get after their degrees. But the reality is so pathetic. No Biotech companies need a Biotech UG or PG student. They need only people with PhD and a decade of experience in the field. Then why this course is still running to create unfortunate unemployed degree holders?
For being a lecturer in Biotechnology is considered to be the most difficult talk as because there are only a few lecturer positions for Biotechnology in government aided colleges. Most of the Biotechnology courses running in India are under self-financing sector. Self-financing colleges are willing to give an initial salary of Rs 6000-7000 (approx.) which is much lower than the monthly collection of a street beggar. If the candidate have CSIR NET the colleges will not take them fearing they would demand more salary later.
In research, how many research institutes we have? How many permanent research positions is there for a Biotechnology graduate? The answer may be less than one percent of students passing out.
Students are not studying a subject for hobby .They are doing it to get a job. The government which allows the universities to start these junk courses has the responsibility to give jobs too. They can give it if they think liberally.
Biotechnology students are considered as life science students only when they write CSIR NET exams .They clear the exams by competing with all life science stream students. But after passing NET exams too they are not eligible to apply for a biology lecturer job. They can apply for lecturer jobs in Biotechnology only .They need to clear life science entrance and they are not eligible for life science jobs. Is this Good? People with M Sc electronics were given equivalence to M Sc Physics by all Universities. People with Marine Biology are given equivalence to Zoology by all Universities. Biotechnology is not given even equivalence to any subjects not even to Biochemistry or Microbiology (Which are studied in depth by Biotechies ). Equivalence of Biotechnology with all other Life Science subjects is the need of the hour. If Biotechnology is given equivalence to Life science subjects even B Sc students can find their jobs in schools, hospitals, medical laboratories, food testing laboratories etc.Post Graduates can find plenty of Professor Jobs in colleges. The fact to know is that, a general biology degree like Botany or Zoology syllabus includes 90 % of Biotechnology only. Only a minor portion includes basic Biology. The irony is that these general biology graduates are often selected to tech Biotechnology but when it comes vice versa it become a problem.
Because lot of talented life scientists are diverting away from the field due to lack of employment opportunities. For lectureship if any university is not satisfied with CSIR NET exams they can conduct one more and make Biotechnology graduates eligible to teach life science subjects. This will be the apt time for the government to respond in this issue. We think the government will took necessary and immediate action on this.
We humbly request the Ministry of Science and Technology and UGC to look into this request and please try to resolve, as it spoils many lives as time extents to solve the problem.
