In most of the western world like USA, Europe, Canada etc., people are working 5 days a week and two days of relaxation including Saturday and Sunday. Two days of relaxation is very necessary after a hectic schedule of work for the entire week. ‘Rest strengthens the body, the mind too is thus supported: but unremitting toil destroys both’ –Ovid. So it’s very important to have enough rest or relaxation after a heavy work schedule.

In modern India its young adults who are the main work force.  One or two decade ago Indian men were the main work force, but present scenario is changing as most of women are getting into work force in all the possible fields.  Previously it was women who were at home and available 24*7 for the kids, presently the scenario is changed.  It’s just 4- 6 hours a women is available at home as she is busy fulfilling her duty as an employee. We would see more of joint family previously now because of working trends more nuclear families are in place. So it’s getting tough to maintain a work life balance as compared to previous scenarios. So quality family life is getting affected, so this in turn affects the working environment. So decreased productivity. 

Sweden recently reduced the working hours from 8 hours to 6 hours * 5 days a week. India few states have a holiday on Saturday to all schools, colleges and private/public sectors. Why not the government provide a uniformity? If some states with that schedule can still work towards progress, why not the entire country? As well some jobs IT, bank employees [alternate Saturday] have holidays on Saturday. Then why this discrepancy? Make it Saturday holiday to all professionals as in other countries. Which in turn can improve quality of work, quality of family life, quality of health, improve economy.

For the employees/ employers: Good work and family life balance, Improved productivity, Decreased stress related disorders, Decreased absenteeism, Improved quality of work, Prosperity of the company, Quality time for the family, Decreased incidence of problematic family, Decreased incidence of crimes, Decreased expenditure on health related issues and Happier citizens in turn Happy Country.

Students/ Children: Increased involvement in extracurricular activities, Increased bonding between parents and children, Happier childhood, Well nurtured children with great moral values, Productive in studies and Increased overall growth of children.
