47-year-old man was tortured and killed while in police custody in Khashuri, Republic of Georgia.
Solomon Kimeridze was a resident of the village of Kvishkheti in Khashuri, Georgia. He was allegedly convicted for a robbery and was taken to the police station for interrogation on February 27, 2012. Few hours later he was transferred to the hospital and died “due to injuries not compatible with life.”
According to the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia: “In the process of interrogation Solomon Kimeridze collapsed from the third floor of Khashuri Police administrative building and fell in the entrance hall of the building while going downstairs to the direction of the second floor. As a result of falling Solomon Kimeridze received multiple body injuries and was transferred to the hospital by the ambulance that was immediately summoned by employees of police.”
Ombudsmen of Georgia already requested Shida Kartli and Mtskheta-Mtianeti district prosecutor’s office to investigate the case objectively since there is a reasonable ground to believe that an act of torture has been committed by the police.
As Georgian media reports: “Kimeridze’s family members said that his body had numerous bruises, including on the face and they want to know what happened in the police station. “
The Government of Georgia should make sure that Shida Kartli and Mtskheta-Mtianeti district prosecutor’s office proceeds to a prompt and impartial investigation of turture of Solomon Kimeridze!
