An Appeal to MAKAUT, AICTE and UGC

An Appeal to MAKAUT, AICTE and UGC
The Issue
Due to the ongoing pandemic COVID-19, Honourable Chief Minister Of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee announced the promotion of the students of the UG and PG courses to the next semester except for the final semester students. Some newspapers published that the announcement meant CLUBBING OF TWO SEMESTERS. Keeping in mind the distressful current situation, we would like to put forward few necessary demands.
- There should NOT be clubbing of two semesters due to its impracticality. Since clearing out subjects of a single semester is quite difficult for most of the students, two semesters combined would make it nearly impossible to prepare, as the resultant to prepare will be around 12 or more subjects even excluding practical papers. Moreover, where staying alive is a challenge, getting food is a probability and getting back to normal situations is a hope, giving consecutive exams is not an option.
- There should be a different teaching method devised for students apart from security-threat posing video conferencing applications. The most commonly used ZOOM app has the maximum risks and already the data of Six Lakh users have been sold in Dark Web. The Government has suggested stopping its use recently. And in a country like India, everyone is not blessed with Internet connectivity provisions neither is it a criteria to get admission in schools or colleges. So, based on online teaching, semester examinations cannot be held. Online teaching can only be used to maintain continuity of studies but NOT CONDUCTING SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS.
- The universities (especially colleges under MAKAUT) should skip the semester for all the students except for the final semester students, since the beginning of the semester was already postponed by a month due to the anti-NRC and anti-CAA protests and now is discontinued because of COVID-19. During the lockdown period, we were given numerous assignments, we had to literally struggle to complete all those within the provided time. So, let the CGPA be provided taking those CGPA and the written class test, which had already been taken, into consideration. No sudden decision on taking examinations could be entertained as most of the student community won’t be prepared mentally or psychologically at all.
- Since Refunding of the fees of the Current Semester is not quite a practical option, we would request all the Universities to donate the money we deposited for the current semester to the PM’s relief fund or CM’s relief fund or any of the NGOs who are selflessly trying to save the human race without thinking of themselves or their families in spite of the life-threatening COVID-19.
