Indian School Uniforms Need To Be In Accordance With Indian Climatic Conditions
The Issue
The climatic conditions of the major portion of India falls into the hot and humid variety, and is further changing towards the worse. Cool and comfortable regions are gradually becoming warm/ hot and humid. Hot and humid conditions are gradually becoming more hot and humid. The major portion of India has now become hot and extremely humid.
Keeping all of the above in view, and also the fact that most schools are not air conditioned, and it need not be, it is high time, that rules be formulated and implemented at the earliest, that school uniforms should be in accordance with the climatic conditions of our country.
Shirts should strictly be of breathable cotton and neck ties need to banned from school uniforms. Tucked in shirts no doubt look smart, but in hot and humid conditions, it is not necessarily comfortable for every individual student, hence in hot and humid days/ months, students should have the freedom to decide as to whether to tuck in their shirts or not. In hot and humid conditions, students should have the freedom to decide whether to wear leather or canvas shoes. Many schools have a 1 1/2 inch wide belt as part of their uniform, so that the buckle of the belt can be prominent, but this width needs to be reduced to a maximum width of 3/4 inch. In the cold months of the year, a student should have the freedom to decide as to whether to wear a full sleeve or half sleeve sweater, or to wear a blazer.
School authorities should be stopped from enforcing uniforms as per their whims and fancies, without taking into account the comfort of the student.
