Amity university should withhold from conducting online examinations.

The Issue

Amity University has initiated an online form to gather consent from its student to conduct examinations online, while the country fights the pandemic of COVID-19 and cyclones and natural calamities such as 'Amphan'. The form concludes with the following statement.

"We need your fullest support to achieve this target however if you feel that you are not in a position to appear in the forthcoming end semester examination online due to technical issues or other unavoidable personal reasons then you can say no also. For all those students who do not wish to appear in examinations now, a chance will be given to reappear in Special supplementary examination (offline/online as per the situations that time). University, in that case, shall not be responsible for late declaration of results."- Amity University

The form engorges the student body by not considering the following student problems -

  1. Natural Calamities such as Amphan has disrupted the livelihood of students from the West Bengal and neighbouring regions deeming it almost improbable to give online examinations.
  2. Power outages and unstable electrical connection.
  3. Unreliable or no internet connectivity.
  4. Electronic equipment such as Laptops or Desktops is not freely available.
  5. Cyber Cafes are not safe during the current scenario.
  6. In case, any technical issue results in premature closure of the exam. The student will have to make do with the marks allotted
  7. The supplementary exams which will require additional payments from the students, which is inhumane considering the financial crisis in the country.

Students are set to lose more if the examinations occur online. It is advisable that the university does the following :

  1. Wait for the Government to provide new guidelines on how to conduct examinations.
  2. Give democratic freedom to the students to choose between online exams or on-campus examination without any repercussion.
  3. If and only if UGC declares Online examinations as the only way to proceed. The university shall provide the students with remuneration from the examination fee which was initially meant to cover the cost of stationary, manpower, electricity, etc. This remuneration shall help the students and help them in this financial crisis.
