Domestic Abuse has no gender, and yes, it is true in our Country too.

The lockdown brings different horrors to different people. With men and their parents locked away with their wives, domestic abuse has increased in our country. Unfortunately, domestic abuse remains a tragic reality for many men and their parents even under ‘normal’ circumstances - the nationwide lockdown has made it worse.

But if you know of any person who survived domestic abuse, you are likely to have heard of him hiding it or being asked to "man up" or straight away accused of him being the perpetrator of violence. How does a victim escape in a lockdown? Men who could earlier talk to a friend or a colleague or escape the house are unable to do so now due to the lack of privacy and transportation. Domestic Abuse is not only physical, but verbal abuse and threat of false cases can cause tremendous mental abuse and can lead to breakdown. Majority of men are already struggling with their jobs due to ongoing crisis, with the businessmen and farmers especially under tremendous pressure. Same is true for the essential workers like Doctors, Nurses (yes, there are male nurses too) , Police and other Government organizations. Along with these pressures they have to suffer verbal and physical abuse by their wives at home.

One of the Men's Rights NGOs reported that 1,774 men called helpline in April, alleged domestic violence, from their wives.

As per the data shared by NGO, in April till now, the Karnataka helpline has received 58 calls, the Punjab and Himachal Pradesh extension has received 88 calls, nine calls were received in Tamil Nadu, 313 calls were received by the extensions of Delhi-Haryana-Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir, 24 by Andhra Pradesh-Telangana, 46 by West Bengal-Orissa and North East collectively, 185 by Maharasthra and Gujrat extension, 110 by Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh extension, 356 calls were received on Uttar Pradesh-Bihar-Jharkhand-Uttrakhand extension and eight calls were received by the Kerala extension. Meanwhile, 577 callers did not opt for any extension.

Aarogya Setu is the Government of India's mobile application developed to proactively communicate risks, best practices, and relevant advisories pertaining to the containment of COVID-19.

Since the app is available in 12 languages and has been downloaded by more than 7 crores (70 million) Indians, it will have a large reach amongst a wider audience.

We are asking the Government o extend the functionality of the  Government of India’s Aarogya Setu mobile application to include an alert for men and their parents to reach out for help.

  1. The precision tracking feature of the app could be used to identify the household where help is needed.
  2. The existing infrastructure of helplines and safe centers run by the  NGOs working in the domain of domestic abuse, can be used to receive the alerts, assign the volunteers, guide them and follow up with them. Some prominent NGOs working for Men are Save Indian Family Foundation, Vaastav Foundation, Sahodar, Save Family Foundation and Save Indian Family. All their numbers are available on the internet and can be interfaced with the app to have calls generated and transferred to helpline of the victim's choosing.
  3. The user could also be given an option to notify his trusted circle of contacts.

For a vulnerable man and/or his parents fighting abuse, a one-click alert getting the nearest personnel or volunteer to knock at his door could mean an escape- from the house or the situation, whichever he or his parents choose. It will also let the abusers know that others can hear them and will act to interrupt the violence.

Sign our petition asking the Government to urgently provide interventions in the Aarogya Setu app to assist men and their parents fighting domestic abuse.

We need to stand together and raise our voice for men and their parents who remain silenced in locked houses and need help
