Recent detection of Covid-19 cases from the surveillance system and swabbing of childcare teachers in the past week raises the concern that there might be more cases in the community who are asymptomatic. Reopening of schools immediately in post circuit breaker poses a high risk of children being infected given the large number of students that makes up a cohort. No amount of enhanced precautionary measures will screen an asymptomatic child or staff attending school which could invariably result in infections within the school.

Improper usage and removal of masks during recess does nothing for infection control. If anything, it provides a false sense of security. In times like this, parents are being told that school attendance 'cannot be voluntary'. This has created tremendous anxiety amongst parents who feel strongly about keeping their children at home during these uncertain times. Making school attendance compulsory creates a situation where children may be ostracized for staying home which is uncalled for.

Allowing the option to keep children home reduces the total number of children in the school which allows for lesser children in school or public transport at any point in time. The virus is anywhere and everywhere, at least give parents the right to do whatever they can to keep their children safe.
