The impact of plastic bags on the environment is a lot worse than we think it is. As of August 2010, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. Approximately 100,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them. In Australia, 50 million garbage bags end up as litter yearly, and the patch of litter floating in the Pacific Ocean is twice the size of the continental United States, and it is roughly 80 percent plastic.

  Plastic bags are very harmful to our environment, and placing a small tax on them in supermarkets has proven to be very effective in other countries that have instilled this system. In Ireland, they issued a tax equivalent to 20 cents on plastic bags that reduced the usage of plastic bags by 95 percent.  

  As a result of plastic bags not breaking down easily, they harm the wildlife. Each year millions of discarded plastic bags end up as litter in the environment when improperly disposed of. So, why not try and minimize the usage of them all together? There are alternatives that could easily be just as good as a plastic bag, and even better since they would help make a difference on the planet that we live in. For example, offering cloth shopping bags that are reusable and cheap in stores, or making your own, even! 

  We have only got one Earth, so we need to do our best to take care of it.

بما أن الأكياس البلاستيكية لا تنهار بسهولة ، فإنها تضر الحياة البرية وتأثر بالبيئة بشكل سلبي. لذا، لماذا لا نحاول التقليل من استخدامها؟ هناك بدائل يمكن أن تكون مثل كيس بلاستيكي، وحتى أفضل لأنها ستساعد على إحداث فرق في الأرض الذي نعيش فيه. على سبيل المثال، تقديم أكياس التسوق المصنوعة من القماش التي تكون قابلة لإعادة الاستخدام ورخيصة في المتاجر، أو صنعها بنفسك. 

ربنا أنعمنا بأرض واحدة فقط، لذا علينا أن نفعل ما بوسعنا للاعتناء بها.
