Local Government Minister Templeman to stand down Cr Michael Separovich

The Issue

To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled.

We, the undersigned, say:

City of Cockburn Councillor Michael Separovich has repeatedly, over the years made racist comments towards First Nations People, displayed ongoing racist behaviours and lack of professionalism.

In 2018, City of Cockburn adopted a Social Media Policy as a direct result of the conduct of Councillor Michael Separovich where made racist comments and remarks towards and at First Nations People.

The City of Cockburn Aboriginal Reference Group has raised complaints about his on-going conduct and the concerns for how this is effecting the City of Cockburn’s relationship with its First Nation Community and the ramifications it has on the validity of City of Cockburn’s Reconciliation Action Plan.

We believe that City of Cockburn is a beautiful place to live, with progressive and forward thinking sister Council in City of Fremantle. We believe City of Cockburn’s wider community is being offended and divided by the actions of Councillor Michael Separovich and it is taking us back on our journey of Reconciliation and establishing a community that is cared for, connected and ready for the future.

We have asked Reconciliation Australia to revoke City of Cockburn’s Reconciliation Action Plan, as long as Councillor Michael Separovich remains as an Elected Member.

Now we ask the Legislative Assembly
To immediately dismiss Councillor Michael Separovich from his position as an Elected Member at the City of Cockburn.
