Isadora Lamego started this petition to Minister Stephen Donnelly

Dear Minister Donnelly,

As Irish-trained final year medical students, we urge you to renew the policy of offering all eligible Irish-trained graduates an intern post, which resulted in over 300 more doctors contributing to our health service. These intern posts were created in April 2020 to bolster the Irish health service during an unprecedented pandemic. The threat of COVID-19 is now stronger than ever with new variants, extended lockdowns and unprecedented waiting lists. Removing these roles would have a negative effect on patient care and only add to the already heavy workload shouldered by those hospital doctors who are supported by intern colleagues.

Retaining these graduates would provide Ireland with a diverse and well-educated cohort of newly-qualified Irish-trained doctors. These doctors are familiar with the Irish healthcare system and are actively seeking opportunities to practice in this system. The pandemic has led to further uncertainties of positions available in Ireland and abroad and increasing pressures of potentially having to seek other, non-traditional employment opportunities.

Irish patients would benefit in a multitude of ways. More intern positions translate into shorter waiting lists for outpatient clinics, better and more direct patient-centred care, and a better share of the workload for the healthcare teams as a whole.

Our generation of doctors would like to give back to the Irish healthcare system. Please give us the opportunity to help Irish people during this once-in-a-lifetime crisis.

Yours sincerely,

The Graduating Medicine Class of 2021
