Many children in Ireland today are waiting up to 3 years to access a theatre to have their scoliosis spinal surgery or other procedures like Halo Traction and Body Casting.
Long waits for surgery are causing huge suffering and pain, long waits increase the risk to children, risks such as increased blood loss, more complex surgeries and indeed reduced outcomes.
Our children are really suffering.
The Action Plan on Scoliosis promised that no child would wait longer than 4 months for a scoliosis surgery by year end. This target must be met to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children. Currently plans are being made to send our children across Europe to avail of surgery. While this is a suitable option for some children, unfortunately due to long waits lots of children are now deemed too complex to travel. There are at too high risk of post op complications and must have the back up of a peadiatric specialist hospital and all the resources that go with it.
Crumlins Orthopaedic theatre is only open 3 days per week. We are calling for this theatre to now open 5 days per week and enable our children who are deemed complex or too young to travel to have access to spinal surgery in the safety of a specialised children's hospital.
For children who have been turned away from other hospitals - there is NO Plan B. We cannot let this continue.
This is a children's rights issue. Our children have a right to bodily integrity and access to health care.
