Implement Roadside Scanning of Dead Dogs and Cats

The Issue

Any animals killed on the public pathway are collected by local authorities but currently, there are no policies in place for the recording of these collections, nor are these animals scanned for a microchip. I am imploring you to improve the efficacy of the legislation by devising effective measures for recording and scanning dead animals on our roads.

  • Firstly, every animal picked up should be recorded (something as simple as an A4 pad listing the descriptive qualities of the animal).
  • Secondly, descriptions are subjective and a picture database would be ideal(social media could be integral here).
  • However, the most important and immediate step needed is the provision of microchip scanners to all local authority collection vehicles
  • Include the collection of dead animals on the roads in the duties of a designated local authority section to remove confusion for both staff and the public

When a pet strays, it is extremely difficult for a family to accept the loss. The adequate recording and scanning of dead animals would grant the hundreds of families who have lost their animal to unknown causes closure while also showing respect to the animals involved.

All animals killed on our roads deserve respect.  Please sign this petition and share it far and wide.
