Citizenship Approval Delays in Ireland for Immigrants

The Issue

There are hundreds and thousands of Immigrants in Ireland who have applied for the citizenship and are still waiting for an approval from the Minister of Justice. There is a massive backlog that needs to be cleared. A lot of applicants are waiting for 2 to 3 years or even more and the situation only seems to be getting worse. The standard time advised to all of those applicants at the time of submission of application was six months.

The applicants and constituents have approached their TD's, however, they are also getting the same generic responses from the Department of Justice. Applicants have to pay 950 euro once their application has been approved and applicants are finding the delays totally unfair, while millions of Euro are being paid by these applicants in order to get the Irish citizenship. An additional 175 euro draft is paid to INIS for the processing of the applications. So that makes it around €1125 in total.

Applicants are even afraid to go on holidays to see their families and friends or on religious festivals as they have been waiting for approval for a long time and don't want to miss the letter of approval and the citizenship ceremony and they are facing a lot of inconvenience. No practical solution has been given by the Minister of Justice to date. There was a small ceremony of 21 people, however, it's been more than 2 months and no virtual ceremonies have been organised so far.

A lot of applicants also believe that some nationalities are being delayed for an approval in particular, while applications from others get prioritised in general and they get the approval sooner, even though, most of their approvals are also not within the 6 months period advised by INIS and take longer than that.

It's now time to sign this petition and raise your voice if you are an immigrant who is directly affected by the above, if you know anyone who is in this situation or if you feel like you should support this petition.

We would like to request the Minister of Justice to get the backlog cleared immediately.

Many thanks for your help and co-operation.

Kind regards,
