At the 27th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 10 May, states gathered to evaluate South Africa's human rights situation on the ground during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). Many states addressed South Africa on its lack of protection of stateless persons and the prevention of statelessness. 4 states recommended that South Africa sign and implement the 1954 Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Conventions on the Reduction of Statelessness. These were Kenya, Belgium, Australia and Germany. 12 states recommended that South Africa amend its laws relating to birth registration and citizenship regardless of the immigration status or nationality of the parents. This is in line with the recent recommendations to South Africa made by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The countries who made recommendations are: Albania, Liechtenstein, Kenya, Czechia, Serbia, Portugal, Mexico and Turkey.
