Dear supporters,
I have been calling for victims of secondhand smoke to speak up and take action, so I thought I'd show you some of the achievements made over the past 16 years.
Many of the regulations you see now were a result of my efforts: no smoking within 5m of bus stops and building entrance/exit, on overhead bridges, covered walkways, HDB void decks, staircase, basement carparks, parks, smoke-free zone in Orchard Road, 10% tobacco tax hike in 2018 etc. Most of these resulted from my previous forum letters, which led to public consultations and eventual implementation.
I also stopped Fairprice from installing cigarette vending machines all over Singapore in 2016 and my letter was featured on Mothership.
In addition, my forum letter 6 years ago successfully prevented "World Tobacco Asia 2014" (industry trade fair) from being held in Singapore.
World Tobacco cancels Singapore exhibition.
One woman's efforts can only go so far. Newspaper editors cannot keep publishing forum letters from the same person. We need more non-smokers to come together and advocate for smoke-free homes.
Please see my 5-pointer suggestions in the second half of my previous update on what you can do.
Thank you!
