For Charlie Angus,
Honourable Member of Parliament, from Timmins, ON,
Mr. Angus,
Good day.
I am a concerned Canadian citizen, resident of Delta, BC, a retired Marine Engineer and a clean food and environment activist. I am very concerned about the hyperbolic rise in the acreage of land being sprayed with this synthetic poison and the sheer volume of it getting into our food web without any scrutiny, measurement, or disclosure of data.
I have had numerous appeals to the federal Government through access to information act, to show me, or to disclose to the Canadian people, all safety test data and documents based on which Health Canada is presumed to have approved the chemical “glyphosate” for use in our agriculture - to no avail.
This chemical is the active ingredient in the Herbicide brand names Round-Up, VisionMax, etc. It’s safety data has been kept hidden from the people for over thirty years. The way I understand law, releasing a product without releasing its safety records is illegal. My correspondence with the Government does indirectly prove my suspicion to be right. I have also followed jurisprudence on this in the supreme court of India and have spoken with the concerned litigants and advocates to educate myself on this.
And yet, Canadians have been denied access to these safety documents, essentially by foot dragging and delay tactic employed by Health Canada for a number of decades now.
I also suspect that the prevalence of this chemical may be related to the increase of certain auto-immune-disorder related ill-health among the people, and poses an existential stress on Canadian wildlife, our flora and fauna. It is my suspicion that the reason these safety documents are stealthily kept out of public eye is that the promoters know that the documents would not stand up to public and open scrutiny and has influenced the Government to keep the documents under wrap for as long as possible. I have been informed by the Government that Health Canada has over 130,000 pages of such safety data, and yet is forever dragging its foot in letting independent verification of the documents.
In this regard, I have created an independent public petition at https://www.change.org/p/minister-of-health-canada-justin-trudeau-health-canada-prove-glyphosate-is-safe?
That petition has almost 23,000 supporters, 98% of who are Canadians. I have been trying to get the documents (in a DVD disk) sent to the Minister of Health Canada, honourable Jane Philpott. I met with my MP and Federal Minister honourable Carla Qualtrough in Delta on April 27, and handed over the data and list of supporters. However, in six weeks we have not heard any update from her, and suspect we might need another MP so the documents can actually reach Health Canada minister and that she can be asked to respond.
The vast number of supporters that signed into that petition understand the issue and would like to carry the effort and find alternative routes if needed, to reach Health Canada and demand that the said documents be released, or approval of the chemical be withdrawn.
Meanwhile, we decided to create another petition to the same effect, but this time on the official Parliament approved template. A screen shot of the draft petition is attached here.
While there is a lot more to the issue of the herbicide and its effect on our lives and our biodiversity, I would end this letter with two requests to you. These are:
1)
Would you be agreeable to carry the documents relating to the existing petition, and deliver it to our Minister of Health Canada, and request her to respond ? I can mail the documents in a DVD disk to you, if meeting you personally is not practical.
2)
I am in search of an MP or two who believe in the issue and are agreeable to sponsor the new official petition (as attached). Are you willing to do so, or can you suggest another MP who might also wish to have his or her name included as a sponsor?
Although I do not personally know you, I decided to look for one that is not in the ruling party, in case such a person is under pressure to avoid the issue of pesticides in our food. I also bypassed the CP, since I have had enough correspondence with them already, during tenure of the last Government, on this issue. Thus, you are the first MP I am writing to about this.
Regret sending this lengthy email, and I hope that you will agree to at least one of the two above requests.
With best regards
Tony Mitra
