RECAP OF THE MEETING First speaker First speaker was Dr. Thierry Vrain, retired genetic engineer, soil biologist and ex-Agriculture Canada scientist. He spoke about the history behind glyphosate, and recent studies that point to possible problems with Glyphosate. He took about 8 minutes and handed over printed documents on many of the studies to you. Second speaker Second to speak with Kenneth Young, Canadian army veteran and spokesperson for military use of toxic chemicals and effect of exposure on humans, including agent orange. He spoke of the Stockholm convention on organic pollutants. He took 6 minutes and handed over his talks in writing to you. Third Speaker The third and main speaker was myself, taking 20 minutes to cover the following five items: i) Handing over of the petition documents in two copies of DVD drives for Health Canada, and one flash drive for the Honourable minister, with about a thousand pages of pdf documentation and 15 videos. ii) My background, such as Going around Canada with Dr. Thierry Vrain to speak about problems with Glyphosate based agriculture; Discovering over two years ago that Canada did not have a lab to test our food or our body fluids for presence of Glyphosate. Writing to the then Health Canada minister Rona Ambrose to do something about getting a lab for Canadians. Receiving no response; Alex Atamanenko, MP from NDP taking up my cause, eventually getting Health Canada to respond to me, which I found to be non-committal; Two years down the line, some labs are now beginning to offer glyphosate testing. I feel satisfied as far as that goes, that I was on the right side of history on that issue; I am now into the next phase of my effort - to get some layer of our Government to start testing local food, soil and water for the people, since labs are now available, and making that results available on public domain. iii) It is my belief that keeping biosafety data of glyphosate hidden from the people is illegal, and my reasons for this belief - i.e. my own personal communication with Health Canada through Access To Information Act applications, as well as legal precedence set in the supreme court of India. It is because of this belief that I made the public petition for Canadian Government to disclose all safety records it has in its possession based on which it decided to approve the use of Glyphosate for Canadian agriculture. Should the minister wish to contact the relevant advocates or litigants in India about the precedence setting case, I am ready to help introduce the Minister to the relevant persons. iv) UN convention on biodiversity and Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. These were created by the world body to help member nations put in place responsible safeguards to prevent damage, destruction, extinction or contamination of local biological diversity from inadvertent or faulty introduction of LMO (living modified organism, which is UN’s way of saying GMO, or genetically modified organism). 170 nations have ratified it. Canada has not. We stand out like a pariah nation in this regard and our biological diversity is being stolen from under our feet as a result. I presented example of how India put in place specific laws that prevents foreign nations of corporations from studying, tampering with or patenting living organisms from India without specific permission from the Government, and how Monsanto was found to be violating this law, and how a court case in India obliged the Government to sue Monsanto for biopiracy as a result. I also gave example of Canola, a Canadian invention, that was a great product, but today 96% of all Canola grown in Canada are Monsanto’s patented version. In my view this is a good example of how our biological heritage is being stolen from under our feet. I request Honourable minister Carla Qualtrough to speak directly with our PM Honourable Justin Trudeau and request him to drop in at the secretarial office of this convention in Montreal, which is in his own constituency and near his own home, and find out how Canada compares with the rest of the world on Cartagena Protocol. She said she would see how and if public funds can be used for this. I did ask her to make this happen, since public funds should be used to tackle issues of public safety, and help Delta to lead the rest of Canada on this important public interest initiative. Fourth speaker Next to speak was Richard Sweeting, retired orthopaedic surgeon and he spoke about manmade chemicals, history of deceit and suppression of evidence on past chemicals by the same company that today sells RoundUp and Glyphosate. He spoke about how long it took for folks to disclose that smoking was bad for health, and how many of these chemicals disrupt our endocrine system and how science and safety data on these chemicals should always be publicly available. He spoke for about 4 minutes or so. Fifth speaker Richard Miller spoke briefly, who had personally suffered for over twenty years through exposure to glyphosate and GMO without apparent cure and without any solution from the medical establishment, cured himself eventually in only ten days, going to 100% organic. There was then a short follow up talk with Mr. Jude Welsh, the Parliamentary affairs director for Minister Carla Qualtrough, who was listening in from Ottawa, about what they were to do as a follow up of our talk and presentation. I then reminded the Minister that I had asked for three things, which were: a) That the minister hands over the petition document to Health Canada and ask it to respond, hoping to get the safety data on Glyphosate released. b) I had asked Honorable Carla Qualtrough to impress upon Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to drop into the Secretarial office of the UN convention on biodiversity and ask about Canada’s position in comparison with the rest of the world on Cartagena Protocol c) And I asked the Honorable Minister to help Delta lead the rest of Canada by arranging for periodic testing of local food, soil and water for presence of Glyphosate and make the result available to the people. The Honourable Minster had wondered if the current liberal Government had been approached for the biosafety data on Glyphosate. I responded saying I opened a fresh Access to Information application with Health Canada the day after the Justin Trudeau government came to power , for Health Canada to disclose to me all safety documents it has read before approving glyphosate, and got a few written confirmation from Health Canada, acknowledging that I have the right to such data, and that they have over 130,000 pages of it, but has still been dragging its feet and I have not seen any of it, which is why the petition was created to get the public to ask the Government to release the data. ============================================ Les membres de la délégation étaient : Tony Mitra (myself) Initiateur de la pétition 2. Résumé de la réunion Premier intervenant Le premier intervenant était Dr. Thierry Vrain, Ingénieur en génétique, retraité, Biologiste de la terre et ancien scientifique pour Agriculture Canada. Il s’est exprimé sur l’histoire qui est liée au Glyphosate, et des dernières études qui montrent la possibilité de problèmes dus au Glyphosate. Son intervention a duré environ huit minutes et il a fourni les copies d’un grand nombre de documents d’études sur ce sujet. Deuxième intervenant Le deuxième était M. Kenneth Young, retraité des forces armées canadiennes et porte-parole pour les militaires sur l’usage de produits chimiques toxiques et des effets de l’exposition de ces produits, y compris de l’agent Orange, sur les humains. Il a parlé de la convention de Stockholm concernant les polluants organiques. Son intervention à duré six minutes et il a fourni la copie de son intervention. Troisième intervenant J’étais le troisième et l’intervenant principal, prenant vingt minutes pour couvrir les cinq sujets suivants : i) Remise des documents de la pétition sur deux DVD pour le ministère Santé Canada et une clé USB mémoire pour l’Honorable ministre de la Santé, ils contiennent environ mille pages de documents en format PDF et quinze vidéos. ii) Mon expérience, comme par exemple : Voyager à travers le Canada avec le Docteur Thierry Vrain pour parler des problèmes liés à l’agriculture au Glyphosate. Découvrir il y a au moins deux ans que le Canada n’avait pas de laboratoire pour tester notre alimentation ou les liquides biologiques de traces de Glyphosate. Écrire à Rona Ambrose, ministre de la santé de l’époque pour qu’il fasse le nécessaire pour que le Canada puisse avoir un laboratoire. Lettre restée sans réponse ; Alex Atamanenko, du parti NPD m’aidant dans mes démarches et pour éventuellement obtenir une réponse du ministère de la Santé, mais que j’ai dû l’admettre comme évasif ; deux ans après quelques laboratoires commencent seulement à offrir des tests sur le Glyphosate. Je me sens satisfait comme cela se passe, au moins sur ce sujet cela va dans le sens de l’histoire ; Je suis maintenant dans la deuxième phase de mes efforts - Avoir quelques éléments de notre gouvernement à commencer des analyses de la production locale de nourriture, de sols, et de l’eau pour notre population, comme des laboratoires sont disponibles et permettent que les résultats soient du domaine public. iii) Ma conviction est que de garder caché du public les résultats des analyses phytosanitaires sur le Glyphosate est illégal et les raisons de cette conviction est que - par exemple mes communications personnelles avec le ministère de la Santé du Canada à travers le règlement d’accès à l’information, et aussi les précédents légaux mis en place par la cour suprême de l’Inde. C’est à cause de cette conviction que j’ai remis une pétition publique au gouvernent canadien de publier tous les documents phytosanitaires qu’il a en sa possession qui ont permis d’approuver l’usage du Glyphosate pour l’agriculture canadienne. Si le ministre désirait contacter des avocats ou des plaignants en Inde concernés par ce cas de jurisprudence, je suis prêt aider le ministre pour entrer en contact avec des personnes concernées. iv) Convention des Nations-Unies sur la biodiversité et le protocole de Carthagène sur la biodiversité. Elles on été crées par l’organisation mondiale pour aider les nations membres à mettre en place des barrières de sécurité responsables pour protéger les dommages, la destruction, l’extinction ou la contamination de la diversité biologique locale de l’introduction par inadvertance ou frauduleuse de OVMG (organisme vivant modifié génétiquement, que L’ONU appelle OGM ou organisme modifié génétiquement). cent soixante dix nations l’on ratifié. Pas le Canada. Nous passons pour une nation de Pariah sur cette question et le résultat est que notre diversité biologique est en train de nous être volée sous nos pieds. J’ai présenté un exemple comment l’Inde a mis en place des lois spécifiques pour empêcher des nations ou compagnies étrangères d’étudier, de modifier ou de breveter des organismes vivants Indiens sans autorisation spécifique du gouvernement, et comment la compagnie Monsanto a été trouvée à violer cette loi, et comment un tribunal en Inde à obligé le gouvernement de poursuivre Monsanto pour piraterie biologique en application de la loi. J’ai aussi donné l’exemple du Canola, une invention canadienne, c’était un produit à succès mais aujourd’hui quatre vingt seize pour-cent de la culture du Canola au Canada est une version brevetée par Monsanto. De mon point de vue c’est un bon exemple comment notre héritage biologique nous a été volé sous nos pieds. Je demande donc que notre honorable ministre Carla Qualtrough parle directement avec notre honorable premier ministre Justin Trudeau pour lui demander de venir au secrétariat de cette organisation à Montréal, située dans sa circonscription et tout près de sa résidence, pour comprendre comment le Canada peut se comparer avec le reste du monde sur le protocole de Carthagène. L’adresse est ci-dessus. v) Enfin j’ai fait une demande urgente à la ministre pour trouver des moyens financiers pour les gens de sa circonscription, la ville de Delta, afin de commencer des études sur le sol, l’eau et les aliments pour la présence de Glyphosate et de mettre ces données dans le domaine public. Elle répond qu’elle va voir comment et si des fonds publics peuvent être utilisés pour cela. Je lui ai demandé de faire en sorte que cela se fasse, car des fonds publics devraient être utiliser à adresser des questions de sécurité publique et aider Delta à devancer le reste du Canada sur cette importante initiative d’intérêt public. Quatrième intervenant L’intervenant suivant était M. Richard Sweeting, chirurgien en orthopédie, retraité et il a parlé de produits chimiques fabriqués, histoire de fraudes et la suppressions d’évidences sur des produits chimiques dans le passé par la même compagnie qui vend aujourd’hui le RoundUp et le Glyphosate. Il a expliqué combien de temps il a fallu pour les gens pour faire reconnaître que fumer était mauvais pour la santé et combien de ces produits chimiques modifient notre sytème endocrinien et comment la science et les données de sécurité de ces produits chimiques devraient toujours être dans le domaine public. Il a parlé environ quatre minutes. Cinquième intervenant Richard Miller a parlé brièvement, il a personnellement souffert pendant plus de vingt années d’exposition au Glyphosate et OGM sans remède apparent et sans solution possible donnée par les établissements médicaux, il s’est auto-médicamenté en environ dix jours avec un régime à cent pour cent organique. Il y a eu un court suivi de discussion avec M. Jude Welsh, le directeur des affaires parlementaires pour la ministre Carla Qualtrough, qui suivait la rencontre depuis Ottawa, au sujet ce qu’il y aura à faire pour le suivi après notre discussion et présentation. J’ai alors rappelé à la ministre que j’ai demandé trois choses qui étaient : a) Que la ministre transmette le document de la pétition à Santé Canada et demander une réponse, espérant avoir les données phytosanitaires du Glyphosate sur le domaine public. b) J’ai demandé à l’honorable Carla Qualtrough d’influencer le premier Ministre Justin Trudeau de se rendre au secrétariat de L’ONU pour la convention sur la biodiversité et de demander à comparer la position du Canada vis-à-vis du reste du monde sur le protocole de Carthagène. c) Et j’ai demandé à l’honorable ministre d’aider Delta à devancer le reste du Canada en organisant des inspection périodiques sur les aliments de production locale, le sol, l’eau pour la présence de Glyphosate et de mettre ces données dans le domaine public. l’honorable ministre se demandait si le gouvernement Libéral actuel a été contacté au sujet des données phytosanitaires sur le Glyphosate. J’ai répondu en disant que j’ai fait un nouvelle demande d’accès à l’information auprès de Santé Canada le lendemain de la mise en place du gouvernement par Justin Trudeau, pour que santé Canada me communique tous les documents qu’il a lu avant d’approuver le Glyphosate, et j’ai obtenu quelques confirmation écrites de Santé Canada reconnaissant que j’ai le droit d’obtenir ces données et qu’il y a environ cent trente mille pages de données, mais ils trainaient les pieds et je n’ai rien vu de cela, ce qui explique pourquoi la pétition à été émise pour que le public demande au gouvernement de publier les données. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The recap was read out and turned into a video by Mistry Britskaya. Apart from following up with the minister and her staff on the follow up on the meeting, I aim to get into the next phase of my effort, trying to get some level of our Government to start testing local food and water for Glyphosate and to disclose it to the people. I have already approached the Mayor of my own town, as has someone from Vancouver with its mayor. None of them have responded yet, but we need to spread the effort and I am keen to encourage many folks from all parts of Canada to write to, or arrange a delegation for, their Municipal council and mayor, asking them to start a public service program to periodically test local food and water for presence of Glyphosate. I shall make another update on it, and explore if there should be another petition, for all Municipalities of Canada to set aside a fund and start testing food and water for Glyphosate, for the people. I do not know if that is a good idea. I feel there comes a point, when people might need to get off their computers and actually show their faces, angry ones even, to their locally elected politicians to force the issue of taking Glyphosate seriously.
