Include Britain’s Contribution to the Slave Trade in UK KS2 and KS3 Education!
The Issue
For a long time Britain’s role in the slave trade has been masked in education. In British Education it is very rare that the slave trade is even mentioned. There is a failure to stress that the concept of ‘race’ was only constructed as a means to enable and excuse the slave trade.
Instead, there is a heavy focus on Britain’s domestic history, and while that may be interesting; it contributes nothing to instilling global awareness in our youth! We need not to make the same mistakes that we have been making for the the past few centuries, we need change!!!
Furthermore, technology is advancing and the world is becoming a smaller place. With these changes there is absolutely no space for racism at all! We need to invest in raising children equipped with a global awareness and a sensitivity to discrimination!
Recent events have shown that we can no longer afford to facilitate racism through our inadequate curriculum. We must look for ways to open the eyes of British youth to a very real British history and although we are not proud of it, it happened. The effects of the slave trade are still ingrained within the minds of our nation, while there is legislation against discrimination (contained within Article 14 of the HRA) our education does not adequately support the legislation we have in place.
In light of this, this petition seeks for the rectification of our education system. Knowledge is power!
