Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) AND the U.S. Centres for Diseases Control (CDC) co-authored and published a paper in November 2018 on Lyme and pregnancy.
After reviewing the global literature on Lyme and pregnancy, the authors confirmed that there is scientific evidence that shows that it is possible for a pregnant mother with Lyme disease to transmit the bacteria to her unborn child.
The paper also confirmed the science shows a link between gestational Lyme disease and serious adverse outcomes including miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death (in 50% of the untreated mother group AND in 11% of the treated mother group!).
Here is a direct quote from the paper: “This Systematic Review summarizes evidence from case studies that provide some limited evidence for transplacental transmission of B. burgdorferi. There was inconsistent evidence for adverse birth outcomes of gestational LD in the epidemiological research, and uncommon adverse outcomes for the fetus may occur as a consequence of gestational LD.”

This is groundbreaking news… one would expect this to be the subject of bulletins and press releases - similar to what happened when Zika was suspected to be the cause of congenital defects. And yet… crickets. Why?
We think that’s kind of important information for medical professionals and women who are, are planning to become pregnant – don’t you?
If you think the Canadian and U.S. Governments should share this information please vote YES in the poll on either Twitter or Facebook (not both). Or let us know if you DON'T think this information should be shared by voting NO. Anyone in any country can vote - this is a global concern that must be addressed. We will share this information with PHAC this week.
