This morning we emailed the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Minister for Education, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Andrew Powell MP and State Assessment and Referral Agency with this petition and the names of the 1,350 that supported it. This is the email we sent and we will update you when we hear back:
Dear Sir/Madam
Please find attached a petition with 1,350 signatures of concerned citizens opposing the development application (DA) for a 24/7 8 bowser + two fast food outlets directly opposite Maleny State School. This DA is currently under consideration by the Queensland Government and they will be advising the Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) of their decision by 6 November. Time is of the essence in this matter.
Also attached is a letter from the Office of the Minister for Education, Training and Employment dated 27 March 2013, when an almost identical development application for the same site was lodged with SCRC. In this letter the Minister's Office states that it will object to the DA on the following grounds:
- the proposed service station is too close to the school
- there will be increased traffic congestion on and around Bunya Street - which would impact on the safety of students and staff accessing the school site
- there could be potential negative health effects from emissions at the service station.
You will also find attached a letter from a group of general practitioners opposing the DA on health and wellbeing grounds.
The evidence and community response clearly highlights that these issues are of significant concern and even more relevant today.
We urge you to consider these issues, and the overwhelming community objection to this development on this particular site.
We look forward to receiving confirmation that the Queensland Government will uphold its obligations to the health and safety of the children and adults of this state and once again strongly object to this inappropriate and damaging development application.
Kind regards
Angie Kelly
