Just to clarify what has been a serious undermining of the gallantry award process- and how senior officers will collude in the awarding of them, note the following: Bob Buick's citation for his Military Medal (see photo) states that he 'decided to fight his way back to the company. On his orders and covered by fire from the remainder of the company, the platoon broke through the enemy fire and rejoined D Company. Sgt BUICK remained with the last group to cover the withdrawal' That citation is nonsense. One of Buick's own section-commanders L/Cpl Barry Magnussen is quoted in Charles Mollison's excellent book, 'Long Tan and Beyond' that Buick had run past him yelling out 'Every man for himself!' The lie is further compounded by Company CO, Major Harry Smith, who wrote that, '“My investigations circa 1986 and later showed that Bob did NOT leave his men, but went over to a flank and aided Private John Beere, later Major ARA, to tend to a mortally wounded soldier and then they covered each other back to 12 Platoon. John has testified to that.” So, we have three different comments about what transpired. So who to believe?   Ironically, it is Buick himself who states the truth in his autobiography.
