Ireland needs to switch from using plastic fishing nets to a more sustainable option

The Issue

Fishing is causing devastating effect on our Oceans, and we need to make drastic changes. The main polluter of our oceans and also what is killing all of our Marine life is not plastic bottles and straws, it’s plastics from fishing nets.

If we wipe out the fish, the oceans are going to die, if the oceans die, so do we! In an ideal world we should immediately stop fishing to save our planet, but realistically this isn’t going to happen unfortunately.

More than half the oxygen we breath everyday is produced by the ocean, and It’s our biggest carbon sink hole. It we ruin this we’re in huge trouble and it’s the end of the world as we know it.

There’s some small and very achievable changes that we can make in our communities here in Ireland to reduce the harm.

Changing from plastic fishing lines, nets, and cable ties, to something more eco - friendly would help an awful lot.

I have seen that in the U.K. there’s some coastal areas such as Looe in Cornwall, that have changed the laws so that there is a ban on using plastic fishing nets and there’s fines offered to anyone found using these dangerous polluters.

On this island of Ireland where many families & businesses depend on fishing as a means to survive we need to do better. Using sustainable fishing nets which can be made from many different natural materials can break down very easy. This is our solution.

Please sign this petition in the hope that we can pull the finger out and get on board with the U.K. and the rest of the world, and make these more eco friendly choices before it’s too late!
