Minimize Single-Use Plastic in Ventura Unified School District Cafeterias

Minimize Single-Use Plastic in Ventura Unified School District Cafeterias
The Issue
Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) currently uses disposable single-use plastic sporks. Plastic production and pollution has severe environmental effects, negatively impacting the health of local ecosystems and our community.
In the 2023/24 school year, VUSD used about 610,560 plastic spork packs. Some of these sporks end up in nearby barrancas or storm drains that lead to the ocean. Even sporks that are placed in trash bins will eventually contribute to micro-plastic pollution, as they will never fully decompose.
We propose that VUSD switches to an environmentally sustainable spork alternative to significantly reduce single-use plastic in cafeterias. Sporks made from bamboo, for example, are compostable, reusable, and far less detrimental to the environment than plastic. Implementing this change will also educate students about the importance of sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, preparing them to be responsible citizens in the future.
Sign this petition to compel VUSD to take immediate action to turn their operations greener in the best interest of students, the planet, and our community.
