There are a number of phones being release by the Chinese Smartphone market that are limited due to the Kernel Restrictions being placed upon them by MediaTek, MediaTek only release the source code for their processors for a fee (which is against GPL policy). The purchase of the source code is covered by a non disclosure agreement. With the source code we, the community would be able to fix issues that MediaTek won't, such as security, reliability and functionality fixes.

if MediaTek were to release these Kernels to the community these phones would have a potential to thrive.
