Min Kim & Nexon America: Reinstate the North American servers for Dungeon Fighter Online (DFO)
The Issue
"Dungeon Fighter Online is a multiplayer PC beat 'em up video game developed by Neople, originally published by Hangame and currently published by Nexon. The game was originally released in Korea as Dungeon & Fighter (던전앤파이터) and in Japan s Arad Senki (アラド戦記 Arado Senki?, lit. War Records of Arad). Closed Beta for an English version of the game ran from July 28, 2009 to August 3, 2009. Early access has begun on September 15, 2009. Open beta started September 22, 2009. It was featured in WCG 2009, and is still a popular televised program in South Korea, where a league is active. Dungeon Fighter had a 300 million registered users celebration on May 25, 2011. It was announced on April 2, 2013, that Dungeon Fighter Online - North America was shutting down, servers closing as per June 13, 2013."
In early April of 2013, it was a grave time for many DFO fans everywhere. Min Kim, CEO of Nexon America, announced that this great MMORPG was to be shut down. There was to be no more Dungeon Fighter Online for the American public after the doomsday date of June 13, 2013. While this news was so shocking to many, many fans of this game, Nexon America, more specifically Min Kim felt like it was the best thing to do:
"Sadly, Dungeon Fighter Online has not attracted enough player interest to properly service the game. Internally, we struggled deeply with the popularity of DFO in North America as the title is immensely popular overseas. For more than three years, we went through many milestones and several pushes before we came to this very difficult decision."
A quote from the announcement, many were confused by what was said. The game apparently had not reached the popularity the company had expected and planned a shutdown because the game had "not attracted enough player interest". This was very strange and many believed that Dungeon Fighter Online was one of the more popular titles. Nonetheless, the announcement happened and soon was the end of DFO...
April 11, 2013. The servers were still up and many players of DFO were having fun, regardless of the horrific end that was soon to come 2 months later. The game ran the same as every other day had. Except for one thing: the DFO cash shop was shut down. It was the last day anyone were to buy anything from Nexon involving DFO and its lovable characters' clothes, to intriguing pets and additional miscellaneous items. While some barely noticed, it wasn't the same when it really was recognized. It was basically a sign of the end that was approaching, like a rough, heavy, & dark storm.
Days on afterwards, the game continued on like normal except without the shop. At this point in time, there was a lot of confusion on what should've been done. Many turned to taking their last moments on the game a privilege and put many more hours into playing it, while many were determined to just leave it because it was all hopeless anyways. This was something that should've never happened and would've been fine just without it.
There were forum topics, blogs, and even videos regarding this issue of the tragic shut down yet to come. The usual were just news and announcements spread around many websites to make sure the attention has been caught, but many actually expressed their remorse and anger because of this. There were many problems regarding this shut down. Not only involving just the shut down in general...
For one example, NX (Nexon) points were spent specifically for this game. As the compensation was "thought" to fully pay back players of this game, there was a problem that was overlooked: many players spent their points specifically for DFO alone. Not anything else. Something like this can cause an uproar and many people (such as myself) felt like they had nothing more to do with these points. They didn't want to switch to another game to use them. They wanted to keep playing DFO.
When the day of reckoning finally came along, it was an awfully sad day. The servers officially shut down, and there was no more DFO. People were saddened with their "R.I.P DFO" comments and short stories of their good times involved in playing this game. Memories were official, and there was no more time to relive them. DFO was officially shut down and according to Nexon America, "permanently".
The game had millions of registered users, and all of their history were certainly gone, from taking our baby steps with Seria to reaching the dreaded, difficult Tower of Despair. Fighting amazing bosses, collecting gold and precious loot, and partying with your best friends was a thing of the past. Even the whole page to DFO was shut down... Go ahead. While some may come around to say that it doesn't matter and that moving on to another MMO would do us all good, it just won't ever be the same. Some even claim this to be the best MMO they've ever played, and we don't blame them. DFO was a loved, daily-played game that can't be relived and enjoyed anymore unless Nexon America does us good by returning this to us. Personally I feel like this was a bad thing for them to do, for themselves and for us. I'm not sure if this is enough to convince NA, but many are asking so much that it's time that I now become the voice of the silent. This must be changed.
Nexon America, please we're asking you dearly. Please return us the memories we once lived playing DFO. Reinstate the North American servers for Dungeon Fighter Online.
Thank you.
