Local ID Cards for Milwaukee!

Local ID Cards for Milwaukee!
The Issue
Right now many undocumented and under-documented community members are denied basic human rights because they don't have a government-issued ID card. For example, Ricardo, a construction worker, broke his back in an accident at worksite but the pharmacists at 3 different drug stores would not give him pain medication he desperately needed because he did not have a current government–issued ID. Mothers who have suffered domestic violence have not been allowed to file papers in court because they do not have an ID, putting their lives and their children’s lives at risk.
A coalition of community groups and public officials is coming together to pass legislation creating a new local identification card in the city of Milwaukee for undocumented and under-documented people. Nationwide at least 13 municipalities have created similar ID cards, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Richmond CA, New Haven CT, Oakland CA, Newark NJ, Harford CT, Asbury Park NJ, Mercer County NJ, Washington D.C., Trenton NJ, Plainfield NJ, Washtenaw County MI, and New York City.
With a Milwaukee ID, community members will be able to do things like cash checks and open bank accounts, benefiting the local economy. With an ID card, people will be able to identify themselves to law enforcement and it will be safer for them to report crimes. The Milwaukee ID will help some of our community's most vulnerable members access basic services, but more than that, the ID will show that all who live here are welcome here. #idMKE #WeAreAllMilwaukee #TodxsSomosMilwaukee
