Po viacerých slovenských mestách mobilné akvárium so živými žralokmi navštívi aj Piešťany. Živé zvieratá v kamióne s akváriami bude vystavovať 18.-20.5. pred obchodným domom Prior. Show Živé žraloky sa podobá na iné akváriá s oceánskymi druhmi či cirkusy so zvieratami. Stiesnené priestory skutočne nedokážu poskytnúť také životné prostredie pre žraloky, aké majú prirodzene v oceáne. Život v malých akváriách a vystavovanie pre oči verejnosti je pre ne stresujúce a v takýchto podmienkach by nemala byť väznená v skutku žiadna živá bytosť. Táto výstava má minimálnu či skôr žiadnu vzdelávaciu hodnotu a neukazuje ani neponúka informácie o živote žralokov v ich prirodzenom prostredí.

V dnešnej dobe, keď krajiny po celom svete i medzinárodné spoločenstvo podnikajú kroky na ochranu žraloka v oceánoch, by sme aj my na Slovensku mali zaujať stanovisko. Žraloky sú ohrozené druhy, na zozname CITES, mali by sme venovať čas, energiu i financie na ich záchranu v divočine, nie na vystavovanie živých bytostí v malých akváriách. Naučme deti v Piešťanoch, čo je správne a nevystavujme ich takémuto „cirkusu“. Zvieratá do cirkusov nepatria.

Vyzývame vás, aby ste sa pridali k nám, empatickým a súcitným ľuďom, ktorým leží na srdci osud oceánov a planéty. Nasledujte etický príklad iných starostov a primátorov, vrátane Hlohovca, ktoré zakázali príchod akvárií a cirkusov do ich miest. Tak ako v Hlohovci, aj v Piešťanoch máme šancu dať najavo, že takéto výstavy vykorisťovania ohrozených druhov pre osobný zisk tu nechceme. Povoliť príchod Živých žralokov nijak nezlepší reputáciu tohto nádherného a rozvinutého mesta.

Je veľmi smutné, že Živé žraloky prezentujú zvieratá v mobilnom akváriu ako zachránené z ropnej škvrny v Mexickom zálive. Pretože záchranná akcia sa zriedka končí vystavovaním živočíšnych druhov za účelom zisku, ale skôr návratom do voľnej prírody. Existujú aj iné spôsoby, ako vyzbierať zdroje na záchranu ohrozených druhov a zvierat zachránených z prírodných katastrof. Žiadni skutoční aktivisti a ochrancovia zvierat a divočiny nebudú vystavovať zvieratá pre zisk. Ak je ich život v zajatí nevyhnutný, tak podmienky by mali maximálne kopírovať prirodzené prostredie. V akváriu s osolenou vodou nemajú žraloky to, čo potrebujú - sú to predátori a patria do určitého ekosystému. Pre oceány sú navyše dôležitým predátorom, ktorý formuje všetky ostatné druhy. Ak vyhynie žralok, celý oceánsky ekosystém bude narušený. Žraloky vo voľnej prírode preplávu stovky až tisíce kilometrov, do akvária rozhodne nepatria. Ohrozené druhy treba chrániť a nie ich zatvárať do malých nádrží, kde dokázateľne trpia. Aké by to asi bolo, keby nás zavreli medzi štyri steny, kde by sme mohli len apaticky krúžiť dookola?

The organisation Zive Zraloky is planning to exhibit live sharks outside Prior shopping centre in Piešt'any, Slovakia, from 18 to 20 May. This follows visits by the aquarium to several other Slovak towns. The truck holding the aquarium with live sharks will visit Piestany  from 18th to 20th May in front of the department store Prior.

A show with live sharks is similar to other aquariums with oceanic species or circuses with animals. Confined spaces really can not provide an appropriate environment for sharks, which are naturally in the ocean. Life in small aquariums and exposure to the public eye is stressful for them and in such circumstances no living creature should be involved. This show has a minimal or almost no educational value and is not nor does it provide information on living sharks in their natural environment.

Nowadays, when countries around the world and the international community are taking steps to protect sharks in the oceans, we too,in Slovakia, should make a stand. Sharks are endangered species on the CITES list, we should devote time, energy and finances to save them in the wild, not display these living creatures in small aquariums. Let us teach the children of Piestany what is right and not subject them to such a "circus". Animals do not belong in circuses.

We encourage you to join us, empathetic and compassionate people who have at heart the fate of the oceans and the planet. Follow the ethical example of other mayors, including Hlohovec, which have banned aquariums and circuses coming to their cities. As in Hlohovec we in Piešt'any have a chance to show that exhibitions involving exploitation of endangered species for personal gain are not wanted here. To permit live sharks does not increase the reputation of this beautiful and developed city.

It is very sad that the sharks presented in the mobile aquarium are said to have been rescued from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A genuine rescue rarely ends up exposing the animal species for profit, but rather focuses on returning them to the wild. There are other, better ways to raise funds to save endangered species and animals rescued from the natural disaster. No real activist and defender of animals and the wilderness will expose animals for profit. If a life in captivity is necessary, the conditions should replicate the animal's natural environment. A salt water aquarium with sharks does not provide them with what they need - they are predators, and belong to a particular ecosystem. Oceans need these important predators who help to balance the whole oceanic ecosystem. Without them, this ecosystem will be disturbed. Sharks in the wild swim across hundreds to thousands of kilometers, in the aquarium they cannot do this. Endangered species should be protected and not shut up in small tanks where they  suffer. What would it be like for humans if we were confined within four walls where all we could do was just roll listlessly around?

Mr Tamajka, we urge you to follow the example of other mayors, including that of HLOHOVEC in banning this type of exhibition from Piešt'any. Allowing this performance which involves animal cruelty and is of questionable educational value does nothing to enhance the reputation of this beautiful city and could, in fact, prove to be a deterrent to investors and tourists alike.
