Save, preserve, and restore the iconic Michelin Tire Factory's smokestack and water tower in Milltown, NJ.

Save, preserve, and restore the iconic Michelin Tire Factory's smokestack and water tower in Milltown, NJ.
The Issue
The iconic smokestack and water tower in the middle of Milltown are a reminder of a bygone era. A visible symbol of what made Milltown an amazing, thriving, hotspot of the Industrial Revolution. Much of our small town would not be what it is today, without the former Michelin Tire Company's factory that everybody in town, and many more from surrounding communities, pass everyday. Thanks to private investors, another former factory in town, the Russell Card Company factory, was saved, restored, and converted into condominiums in the 1990's. That is a better way to save our history. While we know the developer just wants to make money, and the town council and mayor want an eyesore gone, we cannot let them completely destroy our town's roots. The factory is not used anymore, and yes, most of it should be safely taken down. But there is no harm in saving a historic symbol. A symbol that was put on our 100th anniversary banners back in 1996, that many people still fly from their homes with pride. It is easy to destroy the past, as we have watched our beautiful historic Victorian mansions, farm houses (yes, Milltown had farms), and even classic colonial-style houses being destroyed in town. We cannot let the most recognizable symbol of our small community's history disappear into oblivion as well. Please sign this petition and let the Milltown council and mayor, as well as the developer and current property owner, know that our town's symbolic structures, that our history, is not for them to tear down anymore. The borough council must enact legislation and ordnances to save, restore, and preserve our small town's most defining features, and the developer and property owner must ensure that they do not destroy our history just to make a dollar.
