First of all, we’d like to thank those of you who made a contribution to our work yesterday. There’s a lot left to be done for Marcellus and others facing execution, and your donations fuel our efforts.
Yesterday, members of the NAACP spoke out to press in regards to prosecutor Bob McCulloch’s controversial comments about Marcellus Williams’ innocence. Following the stay of execution granted by Missouri Governor Eric Greitens last week, McCulloch (the same prosecutor who refused to indict the cop who shot Michael Brown) stated that there is “zero possibility” Marcellus is innocent – despite the now vast DNA evidence that suggests otherwise.
Members of the NAACP who spoke out yesterday countered McCulloch’s remarks by claiming that his comments are an attempt to suppress the public’s desire for justice.
McCulloch’s general attitude toward the case makes many doubtful that he will consider anything beyond the conclusion he appears to have already arrived at in regards to Marcellus’ case. As Rod Chapel, president of the Missouri State Conference of the NAACP put it yesterday, “We deserve a prosecutor that will allow us to ask the question, ‘was justice done?’”
McCulloch is making it clear that he intends on standing by his belief that Marcellus is guilty – despite no physical evidence linking him to the crime he was convicted for in addition to DNA evidence pointing to the likelihood of another man being behind the 1998 murder of Felicia Gayle. That’s why we need to keep working to make sure that McCulloch’s determination does not undo all of the progress we’ve made in forcing Missouri to begin acknowledging the case for Marcellus’ innocence.
Will you help us continue advocating for Marcellus and others in his position by making a contribution today? https://secure.qgiv.com/for/mtatdp
Prosecutors like McCulloch stand in the way of true justice, and we appreciate the crucial role you continue playing in helping us advocate for people like Marcellus.
