Primary offense for texting and driving in the state of Nebraska

Primary offense for texting and driving in the state of Nebraska

The Issue

Problem
Texting and driving is a secondary offense in the state of Nebraska. This does not diminish the amount of people texting while driving, because they cannot be cited for texting when it is considered to be six times more dangerous than drunk driving. Texting while driving affects everyone on the road, because it only takes one distracted driver to put the lives of others in danger.

Solution
Changing texting while driving from a secondary offense to a primary offense will diminish texting while driving accidents. Nebraska is one of four states that have texting while driving a secondary offense. In 2014 26% of accidents involved a cell phone.

Personal story
I love going out for drives once and awhile, but with other drivers distracted behind the wheel it can take the enjoyment out of driving. I am concerned with the safety of motorists on the road while people still text and drive.  At the end of the day we are all trying to get somewhere preferably in one piece.
