Ranked Choice Voting For Ohio
The Issue
Most Americans feel as if our democracy has come down to a lesser of two evils. As of right now if there is a crowded primary or election all the politician needs to do is two to a narrow group of supporters. This all has to do with our current winner takes all system. The use of this system has put us in a terrible cycle where we have to chose between bad and worse. It does this by creating a system where only two political parties have a major influence in the United States. While there are other options that you could vote for like the green or liberation parties, voting for them in our current voting system is the equivalent of not voting at all because of the little support other political parties have. This system also causes states that are run by a majority of republicans or democrats to create gerrymandered maps so they can ensure good results for them in future elections.
The solution to this is Ranked Choice Voting.
The way this process would work is by having everyone rank their candidates from their first choice to their last choice. If none of the candidates get above 50% in the election, then the candidate with the lowest amount of votes would be eliminated. If your candidate was eliminated then your vote would go to your second choice. This process would keep on happening until we get a candidate with more than 50% of the vote.
This process helps to solve many of the problems that I mentioned above because if we have ranked-choice voting then we will most likely see a rise in people voting for 3rd party candidates. This system will also help create a more representative congress because everyone will have a voice even if their first candidate gets eliminated from the count. This process will also hopefully help with gerrymandering because of the rise in 3rd party voting. This would mean that hopefully, our representatives can help us find solutions for our problems instead of fighting over them.
I petition that we put Ranked Choice Voting as a ballot initiative in our next election.
