Erin Campbell started this petition to Mike Coupe (Sainsbury’s CEO) and

Every year, UK supermarkets sell 59 billion pieces of single use plastic, accumulating a total of 810,000 tonnes annually. That's enough for more than 2,000 pieces per UK household.

In 2018, supermarket chain Morrisons introduced paper bags for customers to use when buying products such as fruit and bread rolls, reducing the sale of single use plastic by approximately 150 million bags. Later, Iceland took a leaf out of their book and did the same. But this is not enough.

We are petitioning for the UK's biggest supermarket chains, including ASDA and Tesco, to eliminate single use plastic bags in their bakeries and fruit and vegetable aisles, and instead opt to introduce paper bags. This will be a huge step forward in reducing plastic waste.

Paper bags are bio-degradable, recyclable and are better for the planet overall. Not only will this help to reduce plastic waste, but it will also help to clean up our streets, as single use plastic bags are often seen discarded on busy high streets and in rivers.

Please help us to reach important figures in supermarket management to raise awareness of this issue by signing this petition!

Thank you!
