This bill will harm our state's agricultural industry in an irreperable way. It will most certainly cause unnecessary harm to the citizens of our state, especially those at higher risk of foodborne illness like pregnant women, children, and the elderly. Currently, food inspections, labeling, and other requirements keep businesses in check and make sure our food supply is safe. This bill calls for no regulation of food, which will lead to innumerable people consuming unsafe food products, getting ill and possibly dying all because we want more "freedom" in how our food is produced. One group is affectionately calling this bill the "Freedom from Food Safety Act." This bill helps no one but businesses who will have no responsibility to the public in keeping their food products safe. This bill also states that no legal action can be taken against anyone who produces unsafe food, even if they knowingly produce and sell unsafe food. We have a right as consumers to know what we are consuming and to know that it is safe to eat.
