The Final Report of the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Planning in Newcastle and the Hunter was released in the NSW Parliament on Tuesday 3 March 2015. Newcastle and Upper Hunter residents and members of Sydney community groups rallied outside Parliament House on that day to support the release of the Report. A public meeting is being held on Monday March 16 at Newcastle City Hall Banquet Room from 7- 9 pm. The aim is to inform Newcastle and Hunter residents of the findings and recommendations of the Report and provide the opportunity for them to discuss it with candidates in the up-coming NSW election. The speakers are David Shoebridge, MLC (Greens) Deputy Chair of the Inquiry Committee, and Lynda Voltz, MLC (Labor) Inquiry Committee member. The meeting will focus on the range of issues considered by the Inquiry, including the Urban Growth /GPT over-development in Newcastle’s CBD the truncation of the Newcastle’s rail line the threatened alienation of iconic King Edward Park the aborted extension of Newcastle Art Gallery serious planning and conduct issues, some already raised at ICAC The format, like the recent overflow Feedback Session in the City Hall on 11 February, (attended by almost 400 people), will give ample time for questions and comments from the audience. Newcastle and Hunter candidates in the up- coming State elections are being invited to attend and respond to the matters raised in the report and questions from the audience. Representatives of community organisations with a special interest in the Inquiry have been invited to respond to the Report’s findings.
