Mike Amesbury to resign so the people can have a By-election

The Issue

We are distressed and disappointed by the recent action of MP Mike Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby. This past month, footage of Amesbury involved in an altercation with a constituent in Frodsham was revealed. He has since been charged with “Common Assault” -- a serious offense that should never be associated with a public servant, least of all an elected representative. Despite these charges, Amesbury has not taken the appropriate step of resigning, leaving us, his constituents, in a position of deep concern and dwindling trust.

He has since been suspended by the Labour Party and charged by police, as pressure grows for him to stand down.

Sir Keir Starmer said the incident was “shocking” and defended Labour’s decision to suspend him.

Our confidence in Amesbury's ability to fulfill his duties as an MP has eroded significantly. A leader, particularly one in a position of such importance, should handle theirself with grace and patience, even at the face of disagreement or provocation. This unfortunate incident has demonstrated a worrying lack of judgment, and raised severe doubts regarding his suitability for the key role he occupies.

The time has come to question whether Amesbury should remain in his position. We believe that we, the constituents of Runcorn and Helsby, deserve better. We wish him health and success in his future endeavors, but we demand that our representative meets the high standards required of a public servant. It is time for Amesbury to step aside and allow us, the people, to decide who should represent us going forward.

Thus, we are petitioning for Mike Amesbury's resignation, followed by a By-Election. Our community deserves to be represented by someone who shows respect for the law, the people, and the high office they hold. Sign this petition if you believe in a future where our elected representatives act in our best interests, serving as a role model of acceptable behavior and democratic values.
