Mike Amesbury, MP - Sentence Review & Parliament Debate

The Issue

Cheshire MP Mike Amesbury repeatedly punched a constituent during a row in the street, after initially knocking him to the ground, where the assault continued.

Amesbury is STILL a serving independent MP, after the Labour Party only suspended him, prior to the outcome of his court case this week, which saw him initially handed a 10 week custodial sentence.

“Most” appeals against sentences in the UK usually take around five months to process  and the guilty party generally has to serve one month before appealing. However, Amesbury’s appeal appears to have been instantly fast-tracked, with his sentence reduced to suspended for two years and several community orders added.

As a former local ward councillor, I am aware of how elected members are quite rightly expected to behave and serve the public accordingly. This was mentioned in both Amesbury’s original trial and subsequent appeal hearing, along with the fact he lied to police about what actually took place on the day of the assault and tried pinning all of the blame on his victim, despite clear CCTV footage showing otherwise.

Taking into account all of the above and the strength of feeling among the British public, as well as the fact Mr Amesbury repeatedly punched his victim on the floor, I would like to see a full review of the sentencing take place and the matter to be debated in parliament.

Please sign and share this petition, to hopefully prevent these kind of double standards occurring again and send out a real message to ANYBODY committing such acts on our streets.

In the meantime, the good people of Runcorn need to ensure a by-election is called.

Kind regards.
