Genshin Impact is a free-to-play action role-playing game developed and published by miHoYo. The game features a fantasy -based open world environment and action based battle system, using elemental magic, character switching and uses gacha game monetization for players to obtain rare characters, weapons, and other resources.

Hey everyone, I’d like to express my view and opinions on the current state of the resin system and provide a bit of feedback. Hopefully, we can all have a civil discussion about this here. Firstly, I want to say I really love this game, and I’ve hit AR 33 now and still continue to enjoy the game. I’ve spent about $150 on pulls, and I am no stranger to spending money in games that I enjoy. The way this current resin system is setup I feel is counter productive to making money, and limits both F2P players and Whales from spending money on the game. Let us get into this here:

What really is a Gacha?

One thing that gets passed around a lot here is that “This is a gacha game, expect gacha mechanics”. I feel most people don’t know what a Gacha actually is. Gacha is just a loot box system that became popular in East Asia as a way of selling toys and trinkets. Baseball cards, YuGiYoh cards, Magic cards, Hearthstone, all these are Gacha as well. Game developers figured this out and now market games that do this with in game items. A resin system is not Gacha, its associated with Gacha, but it is not needed for the mechanic to work. Resin is solely implemented to stall progress in a game, and its been mostly only on mobile games in recent years. Most PC games that release with it fail in a short period of time, I think the only exception is DFO.

Is Genshin a mobile or PC/Console game?

Well the answer is obviously both. I don’t think you could currently classify it as a mobile game that is ported to PC, as it only runs smoothly on a limited set of devices that are typically very expensive. It’s a game that was developed with both sets of players in mind, and that does show in the general game play. Its fluid, fun, and can be quickly learned in just a few minutes. Why this is important is because of the type of income they want. PC/Console players are much different than your typical mobile gacha player in terms of what they view they should spend their money on. This isn’t to say PC/Console players are stingy or wont pay. This is to say they’re more likely to spend money on something that has a conceived value to it (Like trying to get a character) then 20 minutes of game time (about 120 resin).

Resin use cases

Resin is used for a wide variety of things in Genshin, from domains to farm upgrade materials or artifacts, to world bosses to get that 5* drop chance, to ley lines for character EXP and mora. This is where part of the issue lies in my opinion. Mihoyo set out to make a Gacha game that’s different from the norm of your traditional mobile gacha game. Even going so far to release it on PC and Console. This is the first thing you need to remember about this game, its not run through an emulator like blue stacks. Genshin is a full-fledged PC and Console game as much as it works on mobile. Trying to tap into PC whales and Console players is a good strategy as it is a large market of people who, especially on PC, typically have fairly large incomes. Limiting what you can do and how far you can go is no stranger to PC games, and is used in a lot of MMOs, just sneakily. Weekly lock outs are extremely common in those types of games (destiny only gives loot from raids once a week for example). What Genshin does that most other similar games don’t do, is that they limit your ability to grind for a long period of time on items that have high RNG. Say you want to get a 5*, that would be time gated, but if you wanted that perfect 4* roll, that shouldn’t be time gated, as just grinding that 4* roll to be perfect for just one of your characters will take a lot of time.

F2P and P2W resin

The resin system not only limits the F2P player but also considerably hurts wales and other players who want to support their game with their money. As someone who likes to sink as much time into a game as I can, and spend a decent amount of money on them, its hard to bring myself to spend more than I have on Genshin as the price of Resin is very high. 800 primogems for a days’ worth of refreshes is a lot to ask just for someone who enjoys the game to play it as much as possible. Isn’t this what fragile resin should be used for? As you can go over your daily refresh with Fragile Resin, paying for resin with primogems seems like you need two currencies to do the same thing. Where character exp, mora, artifacts, and ascension materials all being locked behind this system it creates a system where the player is worried that they’re going to spend their limited resource on something they shouldn’t. Character EXP and mora I feel is the biggest thing gated by resin that I have an issue with. In a game that’s centered around paying money to pull characters so you can play them, after a certain level it becomes extremely difficult, even when spending primogems, to level a character up to where your original characters are. This creates a huge issue, as for me, I don’t want to pull wishes now. I don’t know how I could ever catch up with my other characters without stalling any progression I was making before. Getting a new 5* should feel good, it shouldn’t give you more questions like “Oh now how am I going to level them so I can actually play with them?” If you don’t provide players a way to level up characters without being locked out, or charging a large amount to do it, its going to move even medium spenders away from the game. With a 90 pull pity for a 5*, I shouldn’t be expected to shell out another $50 just to level up my now $150 character. That would be like opening a pack of Magic Cards and the the card requiring you to spend more money to read the text to find out what it does.

To summarize, MiHoYo please find a way to rework the current resin system so that Genshin Impact players are not forced to 15 minutes of daily content (daily commissions and a few domains) after reaching Adventure Rank +30, with so many aspects of the game gated behind such low amounts of daily resin.
