Please make it illegal to keep dogs on short chains or in small cages,sometimes for years and years without respite. The suffering,both mental and physical is incalculable. Their lives are a misery

Legislation is needed to protect these vulnerable,lonely and miserable dogs,who,day in day out face this awful cruelty

A law must be passed where the dog is allowed to run free and allowed to behave naturally at least part of the day

Also dogs kept in cages must be banned completely unless it is only for the dog needs treatment but this must be a limited time only. There is one rescue in Madeira where some dogs especially elderly and infirm,who have very little chance of being adopted and are just left to ultimately die for years on end.

There are also some very good rescues,where the dogs have much more freedom and are socialised and potential adopters are able to see their personalities. This is impossible when they are shut away and forgotten about. They are fed but only newspapers to lie on and no bedding. They are mostly lying in their own mess. The rescue should refer the dogs to other sanctuaries and not allow themselves to be bursting at the seams and not enough staff or volunteers to take care of them.vTheir basic needs are not met. Many have bad teeth,bad ears and long nails and desperately need bathing

I really hope the Mayor of FUNCHAL Will do his utmost to protect and help these poor lonely souls whose lives are one long nightmare.
