The Issue

Middlebury Union Middle School Field Hockey Players would like to protest the short skirts that are required as uniforms. Despite the fact that the majority of Field hockey players are women, we believe that hyperfeminine attire is unnecessary and is designed to sexualize us. We are minors and do not feel that this is an appropriate requirement. The members of the Middlebury Union Middle School Field Hockey Team are taking a stand against the lack of choice regarding uniforms for our girls athletic teams. Starting this fall, the team would like the choice to wear the school provided skirts or player provided black shorts. We believe that this rule is inappropriate and outdated. In addition to that, there have been men that have previously shown interest in our team until finding out about the skirt requirement. They are valuable players that could have been a great addition to our team. In other cases, there have been young women on our team that feel very uncomfortable expressing themselves through feminine clothes and girls with tactual (touch) sensory issues who have trouble wearing skirts due to those. These rules alienate them and we feel that they are unnecessary. - The MUMS field Hockey Team Players.
