Replace xbox one accessories for non console owners

The Issue

I am a PC gamer.  Recently my xbox one controller stopped working.  I called Microsoft support to see about them replacing it, as it clearly states on the box that it has a 90 day warranty.  I purchased the device the 27th of February 2015.  I began my call at around 3pm.  Spoke with a very nice lady for about 45 minutes.  She was going to replace my device but was having trouble figuring out how.  Somehow I was disconnected.  So I called back, was on the phone with a technician for about 15 minutes before I was hung up on, again.  Called back one more time.  This time I was not disconnected, I spoke with a young lady for over an hour, she couldn't figure out how to process the repair/replacement.  Eventually she spoke with her supervisor, he stated that because I did not own an xbox one console, they would not honor the warranty (so clearly stated on the back of the packaging) because they didn't have a serial number to enter into their system.  

This affects all PC gamers as well as console owners.  If you have a used console, and buy a controller, who is to say they will honor your warranty.  After all, your console is second hand, and has already been registered to someone else.  

All I am asking, is for Microsoft to honor the warranty that is so clearly stated on the packaging.  I don't think that is a lot to ask.  So if you would like to help support this cause, even if you may not be affected by it, your support would be greatly appreciated.
