The Law states that even if the minor lies about his or her age, including using a fake Identification, a person who engages in sexual penetration or sexual contact with a minor can still be charged with criminal sexual conduct. This should be changed as too often a minor lies about the incident and then faces no charges themselves for the Lie. It is considered Statutory Rape then and the accused faces a life time title because they thought they had legal consent. Chai Freeman in Jackson Michigan may have to face life in prison. He is 20 years of age and sometime last year a 12 year old girl lied about her age to a whole group of friends. She not only lied and seduced Chai but she did so to his best friend and two sisters.  She claims she was raped. Two other boys were there when the supposed rape happened. This 12 year old continues to date at this time an 18 year old.   The only reason she is claiming rape to the knowledge known is that she was caught shoplifting and used this as an excuse to get in less trouble with her parent. The police took Chai in for questioning without reading him his rights and video taped the questioning. They also said they would talk to his friend and sisters about what she claims happened but they never did and on May 27th, 2015 Chai was taken under arrest for 'raping' this girl and now faces LIFE in prison of which WE the people have to pay for all due to a lie. We have eye witnesses and evidence that this girl had lied to not only Chai but several other people. Yet the law insists that even though the girl had lied, it doesn't matter. Chai might face life in prison while this young girl continues to lure men into her bed. This is injustice and this is wrong! Even a few years of probating is reasonable but not life in prison for a young lady lying and calling rape for shoplifting. This law needs to challenged and changed so it continues to get Sexual offenders but also will keep men like Chai free from the abuse of lies.  How many other innocent men and women will be put in a situation like this and sent to life in prison for an unfair law? By signing this petition I hope we can change this law and save people like Chai. He has yet to be punished for this mistake. His court dates are on June 5th and June 9th.  The other bad part that this law affects is those that DO tell the truth and law officials have to determine a better way to find out what is the truth?  How to gather the truth and the circumstances that would best fit a better law to protect the innocent on both sides and make sure those who are the true antagonist are caught and punished, whether they lied on either side and what the facts are.  Sure that is the lawyers job, BUT, if it can be proven early on that the "victim" lied. Then the law needs to change to include penalties on the liar.  NOT on the falsely accused. As a final note be sure you ask several people the age of a person and see several types of documentation regarding their age as even a fake ID will not keep you safe from prosecution as the law stands now if you ever decide to sleep or touch someone sexually who is not the age of consent in Michigan which is 16.  You yourself may be a victim and that is why you should stand up and say change this law.
