Allow nonresident Michigan landowners to hunt their property at a reduced cost of the current nonresident hunting fees by creating a special "Nonresident Landowner" hunting license and tags.
The Issue
Nonresident Michigan landowners are unfairly discriminated against in regards to hunting in the State of Michigan. Nonresident Michigan landowners pay property taxes just as Michigan residents do. Many of these nonresident landowners also do business in Michigan, paying sales tax and contributing to the Michigan economy just as Michigan residents do. Unfortunately, the cost of the Nonresident Hunting license and tag fees make hunting our own property burdensome and many of us are beginning to hunt elsewhere. In order to attract this unique population back to hunting in Michigan, nonresident Michigan landowners should be able to hunt their Michigan properties at a reduced price compared to non-landowner, nonresident hunters. A new license and tag should be created specifically for this group of hunters in order to distinguish them from Michigan resident hunters and nonresident hunters. With decreasing the cost of hunting licenses and tags for nonresident Michigan landowners, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will likely see an increase in revenue as the numbers of this population of hunter also increase.
