Last September I offered to foster a dog for Michele Marie at ADLR. She had never met me but asked if I could foster. I said yes and she told me to come pick him up at her house on a specified day. I brought my Doberman to meet him because if they did not get along I would not foster him. The dog needing fostered was outside in a fenced yard when I got there. The other dogs where in a separate room as not to overwhelm my dog. My dog and I greeted Michele and her sister Lisa. We then proceeded to the back yard to meet Apollo. My dog was on leash and the meeting went great. I told her I would be happy to foster and she gave me the dog and I was on my way. The dog was in rough shape from living on the streets. He had been pulled by MM the week before. After getting him home I noticed he had a slight limp. The limp got progressively worse. The dog also had a bad case of worms as evidenced in his feces. I contacted Michele and told her that the dog could barely walk and that I had also found two 50 cent piece sized open wounds on each inner thigh near his testes area. She had me bring the dog in Monday morning. Dr Vandenbrink looked at the dog and said he would need surgery. He also asked Michele if the dog was on any medication for his skin condition. She replied no. Dr V had clearly never seen the dog before this. I was given a prescription for antibiotics because the dog had an upper respiratory infection, pain meds, and a powder to put in his food for the skin condition. Michele then told me the bill was $80 which I had offered to help pay but I payed all of it. I was told to bring back the dog the following week for surgery. The next week I did a fundraiser to help the rescue pay for the surgery and my husband and I also offered to help pay for the surgery. All of my friends donated to the rescue as did many supporters of the rescue. My husband and I had decided that we where going to adopt the dog and help him any way we could. I dropped the dog off for surgery the following week. I live approximately 1 and 1/2 hours from Allegan. When I was almost home Michele called and told me that Vader didn't need surgery, that after he was sedated he had full range of motion. The Dr determined it was an old injury from probably being hit by a car while he was a stray and it had never healed properly. X-rays where never taken. When Vader was brought out to me he was covered in hives. Michele quickly treated him and sat with him until he was ok to go home with me. I was asked to pay for the pre-op meds and anesthesia that was used on Vader. I told Michele I felt bad that all my friends had donated to pay for a surgery that he didn't need. She told me she would apply it to his adoption fee. I was sent home with pain meds. When I asked Michele how much there was in surgery donations I was not told. I asked how much the adoption fee was minus the surgery donations and was not told.
Vader had never been vetted. Michele herself did his heart worm, Lyme disease test and rabies vaccine. The Allegan animal shelter did his neuter. He was in her care for a week and a half and did not notice he had worms.
She made a post on FB about people arguing with her about adoption fees and that if they didn't pay the damn fee to give her back her dog. We paid the $300 adoption fee. I had to ask several times to get copies of Vaders vet records. I ended up having to have my veterinarians office contact her at the clinic.
A month later we where asked to foster another dog. Spike was extremely malnourished and was staying at AAH until he put on enough weight to be neutered. He died during pre op.
I was asked about a week later to foster Dino. I picked him up from Allegan animal hospital where he had recently been neutered. He had been with Michele about a week I believe. The dog was also very malnourished. Dino quickly found his place in our home and we decided to adopt him. Michele said his adoption fee was $200 since we where previous adopters. I was not asked to sign adoption papers. When I asked about them I was told it wasn't necessary. I again had to ask several times to get his vet records.
In January Michele went to MO to pick up a natural eared red female. She was with her foster for about a week when Michele pulled her because the foster took her to her own vet and had her sedated to examine her ears. She was with another foster for the weekend but they couldn't keep her so Michele asked if I would foster her. I picked the dog up at AAH and was given a bag with her vet records and Dino's ( who we had named Bones).
A few weeks later Michele asked me if I could pay something to adopt Gemma (the re headed female) because her power was getting turned off. I donated $50 and adopted Gemma.
