Perhaps one of the biggest and lasting gifts that Robin Williams may have left us; creating an open dialogue about depression.

The Issue

It is a bitter irony that for all the humor and laughter Robin Williams has undoubtedly brought to so many with his signature brand of razor-sharp humor that appealed to so many, undoubtedly uplifting many a depressed spirit, that he succumbed to the debilitating pain and soul-crushing apathy that is often a part of sever depressive disorder.

For many, It is easy to dismiss this kind of thing though. You can't see an incision or a scar, or a cast on a broken limb, or the brain chemistry that makes this disease so insidious, but I'll wager there is NO physical pain that can compare to the emotional pain clinical depression or a sever depressive episode brings. It is hard to believe and understand for those who have not experienced depression on this kind of scale.

It has been my experience that one can learn a lot by other peoples' experiences; if you work to empathize with what others may be going though, and understand what it means to be a true friend, a good boss, or a good employer.

Robin Williams brought the therapy of comedic laughter that uplifted countless people experiencing depression, but in turn may have isolated himself by perhaps not being able to share his depression experience with those that really care. We owe it to him and all those who suffer from depression and other mental health issues to evolve as a society to work to address these very real diseases without ridicule or minimization.

Let's work to evolve in our thinking and to make a change for the good.

IN HONOR OF ROBIN WILLIAMS, I PROPOSE THROUGH NATIONAL DECREE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY THAT THE DAY OF HIS DEATH BE RECOGNIZED AS AN ANNUAL DAY OF DEPRESSION AWARENESS.  FURTHERMORE, WE LET A GRAY RIBBON REPRESENT AND RAISE AWARENESS OF DEPRESSION LIKE A PINK RIBBON RAISES AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER.
