

The overwhelming pressure from campaigners like us forced the Brazilian government to backtrack on its plan to open the RENCA reserve in the Amazon to mining (see https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/sep/26/brazil-backtracks-on-plan-to-open-up-amazon-forest-to-mining This is a very encouraging victory for all of us who have signed the present and other petitions, which proves that international pressure plays a decisive role in shaping the environmental policy of Nations. Having said this, the global rate of deforestation in the Amazon is growing dramatically. Only in May, 8,000 hectares (i.e. a 9 x 9 km2 area) were illegally destroyed, which includes 5,000 hectares in the Xingu reserve (figures from ISA, Istituto Socio-Ambiental, https://www.socioambiental.org/pt-br/blog/blog-do-xingu/com-a-diminuicao-das-chuvas-desmatamento-dispara-no-para This means that coordinated actions at international level are needed. As individuals, we may contribute with simple actions, for example by banniing the consumption of: i) soja and soja-derived products ii) imported meat iii) tropical wood.
