DO NOT RELEASE PRESSURE! Following the strong critics raised worldwide, yesterday (28 August), the Brazilian Government cancelled the decree of extinction of the RENCA reserve edited 5 days earlier, but edited a new one which would ensure the protection of the natural areas and of the indigenous territories near the area where mining will be permitted! (see, for example: http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/ambiente/2017/08/1913721-apos-polemica-temer-revoga-decreto-sobre-renca-mas-promete-novo-texto.shtml ). This measure aimed at stopping the critics does not change anything: it is well known that it is impossible to prevent illegal deforestation, garimpo and threats to the native people once a mining activity begins and new roads are constructed. Therefore, it is necessary to reinforce the pressure on the Government. The mining project in the RENCA reserve must be abandoned and the protected areas must be extended.
