To Michael Pell (Producer of Sunrise and Weekend Sunrise), the Weekend Sunrise Presenters, Sunrise Presenters and Channel Seven,
This petition is in regards to a recent segment (link here) on Weekend Sunrise (regarding an article in The Daily Telegraph), where IVF was discussed with incorrect facts and in an inconsiderate nature. Myself and many other woman and men that have to undergo In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), a medical procedure, in order to conceive children, are wanting a) an apology for some of the comments b) correct facts to be discussed and c) an interview with a fertility specialist and someone currently going through (or has been through) IVF procedures.
The headline read "Addicted To IVF" and the words "IVF like betting on pokies" was splashed across the screen. The segment gave a warning about women getting "hooked to IVF in the same way gamblers get addicted to the pokies". The presenters made several inaccurate and inconsiderate comments including
-"...after ten rounds, sometimes it is just not meant to be"
-"Do you think there should be a try limit?"
-"...the main inhibitors are age and stress... those are both things you can deal with... get the stress out of your life"
Thank you to Weekend Sunrise Presenter Monique Wright for actually saying that it is one of the things that people undergoing IVF hate: being told to relax.
This segment was incorrect as studies have shown that stress is not a major contributing factor to infertility or miscarriages. (www.bmj.com/content/342/bmj.d223 The comments were also very insensitive and the segment should have included someone in the IVF field as well as someone currently going through (or has been through) IVF procedures.
IVF and infertility should be spoken about more to increase awareness and discussion but not in the manner of which it was done.
Note: Factors such as high blood pressure due to stress can affect conception or pregnancy but the presenters were implying that no stress equals pregnancy, when this is obviously not the case for people for medical conditions that affect their infertility.
