A Condemnation of AFT President Randy Weingarten by the UFT for Backing Linda Sarsour
The Issue
We call on the President of the United Federation of Teachers, Michael Mulgrew to condemn the public association and praise that his predecessor and current President of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten has given to Linda Sarsour-a rabid racist and anti-semite. Randi praised Sarsour on Twitter-going as far as to call her a warrior for justice and a friend. This is the same Linda Sarsour who was criticized this past March for saying in an interview that one cannot be both a feminist and a Zionist. She previously posted a Twitter a picture of a Palestinian throwing a rock, presumably at Israelis and stated that the photo was the “definition of courage.” We need to stand together and demand that Michael Mulgrew do the honorable thing and censure Randi Weingarten for her staunch backing of such a vile individual. We need to remind Michael Mulgrew that following the Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME, not only are we not mandated to contribute anything toward membership to the UFT-which comes out to over $1,000 annually per employee, but we can even gain by withdrawing from the UFT and receive a guaranteed Annual Rate of Return of 8.25% in the fixed TRS Fund instead of the 7% for UFT members. With our costly membership in the UFT, we in turn expect our religious and moral values to be respected. We make up thousands of proud members of the UFT, and if we drop our membership, Michael Mulgrew will have no one to blame but Randi Weingarten, whose organization the UFT share direct affiliation with.
