Maple Leaf CEO Michael McCain, please abandon plans for a slaughterhouse in London Ontario

Maple Leaf CEO Michael McCain, please abandon plans for a slaughterhouse in London Ontario
The Issue
Maple Leaf is planning on opening another slaughterhouse in London, Ontario. We call on Michael McCain, CEO of Maple Leaf foods, to reverse this decision and instead open a plant based food facility.
#STOPMAPLELEAFVIOLENCE
The plan to open a new slaughterhouse will result in:
- The increased torture and murder of animals. 480,000 baby chickens will be slaughtered daily by being poisoned in gas chambers where corrosive carbon dioxide will burn their lungs.
- ‘Food’ production that is unhealthy. Eating animal products is linked to a whole host of health issues such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
- An increased contribution to the climate crisis.
- Up to 8 million litres of fresh water will be used daily and that amount will become wastewater requiring processing by the city of London before being dumped into the Thames River.
- Maple Leaf Foods itself estimates that 21,000 liters of toxic cleaning solutions per week will be used in the proposed plant. The majority of that will become wastewater and will end up in the Thames River.
Damaging effects on local community:
- A net loss of 300 jobs will occur due to the closure of the current St. Mary’s facility along with Toronto and Brampton locations.
- An increase of domestic abuse & violence which occurs where slaughterhouses are located (SLAUGHTERHOUSE WORKER SUPPORT LINE: 1-800-510-6289).
- Slaughterhouse workers suffer from high stress, alcoholism, drug addiction and some commit suicide.
- New immigrants to Canada often have no choice and end up working in slaughterhouses.
- The proposed slaughterhouse location is at a site where rare Indigenous historical artifacts have been found.
We demand that Maple Leaf:
- STOP the proposed construction of a new slaughterhouse.
- STOP killing millions of chickens each year. Over 50 billion (50,000,000,000) chickens are killed globally every year.
- STOP cramming chickens into trucks - each contains several thousand chickens.
- STOP killing 6 week old “broiler” chickens.
- STOP accepting taxpayer dollars to subsidize these atrocities. The average Canadian is forced to spend $275 to protect the Canadian poultry and dairy industries.
Instead Maple Leaf should transition to a plant based food company.
What you can do:
- You can stop these atrocities now by voting with your wallet & BOYCOTT Maple Leaf & any company involved with exploiting animals.
- Attend a “Save Movement” vigil at a local slaughterhouse.

Dear Mr. McCain
I respectfully call on you to abandon the proposed plan to open a slaughterhouse in London, Ontario and instead transition Maple Leaf Foods to a plant based company.
Animals do not want to die and humans have no necessity to consume them. In fact a plant based diet has been proven to be healthier, reversing many diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Animal agriculture is also a leading contributor to the climate crisis. A UN report last year indicated we have less than 12 years left to reverse the effects of climate change or face possible extinction.
The planned slaughterhouse would have a devastating effect on not only the chickens, but also on the local area, causing pollution and environmental damage and mental health issues to those community members employed at the facility. The proposed slaughterhouse location is also at a site where rare Indigenous historical artifacts have been found.
Please, Mr. McCain, protect animals, the earth and the community from this terrible and unnecessary proposed slaughterhouse. Instead set a compassionate example that can become a new standard around the world, and reverse this decision.
Sincerely,
